A leak in your sprinkler system line affects the normal operation of the sprinkler setup to a large extent. It weakens the water pressure on which the sprinkler system relies heavily. In addition, your monthly water bills drive you crazy because you actually have to pay for something you did not use at all.
In order to restore the normal condition of the sprinkler system, a proper remodeling of the sprinkler line needs to be undertaken.
To handle the project successfully, you would need a properly arranged set of plumbing tools. These would include the screwdrivers, a pair of channel lock pliers, a hacksaw, a roll of Teflon tape, PVC primer (in case of PVC pipe), PVC glue etc. In case of copper pipes, go for the metal primer and glue.
Walk down to your water meter to locate a water control valve. Turn it off to cut water supply to the whole house. In case of a detached sprinkler system, an individual sprinkler valve can be located adjacent to the sprinkler system.
Walk down to the concerned site to explore the crack in the sprinkler line. Observe the size of the crack and mark down a tag line on each side of the crack leaving a margin of about two or three inches on either side. Use a tape to do so as a typical marker pen would not be visible on the pipe.
Grab a hacksaw to cut apart the length of the pipe as marked and drain down the water into a bucket or a container placed beneath the fixture. Gently remove the cut out pipe from the setup and take it to a hardware shop to demand a new one. Make sure that the width and the length of the pipe is similar to that of the old pipe. Also don’t forget to include the prospect of the connectors or couplings in the eventual setup.
Put a liberal amount of glue on the inside of the connectors and on the edges of the new pipe so as to render a strong binding to the segment. Connect the connectors on either end of the new pipe and let the glue dry off.
Be quick in your course of action as the glue dries very quickly. Once connectors are attached and glued well to the new pipe, insert the segment into the sprinkler line setup and apply some PVC primer on the junctures.
